Italy launches manslaughter probe into death of teacher, 57, who died a day after being given AstraZeneca vaccine as country re-enters lockdown and EU turns its back on the jab

Italian prosecutors have opened a manslaughter probe into the death of music teacher Sandro Tognatti, 57

Mr Tognatti died Sunday after getting an AstraZeneca vaccine, though cause of death has not been given

Probe launched as Italy, France and Germany became latest EU nations to suspend use of AstraZeneca's jab That is despite Covid cases rising with leaders facing prospect of more lockdowns due to low vaccine rates

Italy reimposed measures today, German doctors called for tough approach and hospitals in Paris overflowed

Italian prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation today after a music teacher died on Sunday - a day after receiving AstraZeneca's Covid vaccine.

The judiciary in Biella, in northern Italy, opened a preliminary probe into the death of 57-year-old Sandro Tognatti, whose cause of death remains unknown. They stressed that there is no link to AstraZeneca's vaccine at this stage and the probe is intended to establish whether anyone has a case to answer.

It came as Italians woke up to fresh lockdown restrictions today, with 13 of the country's 21 regions now in a 'red zone' meaning schools, restaurants, shops and museums have to close, and people cannot leave their homes except for work, health or other essential reasons. Another seven regions have been declared 'orange zones', meaning shops and beauticians can remain open except during a night-time curfew, while all other venues have to close and travel outside the local area is restricted. Just one region, Sardinia, is in a lockdown-free 'white zone'.

Italy also temporarily banned the use of all AstraZeneca vaccines amid fears it causes blood clots, with France and Germany also enacting bans and saying they are waiting for European regulators to give guidance.

The European Medicines Agency said last week that there is no reason to halt use of the jab and that 'the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects', but its investigation is continuing and another report is due Thursday.

It comes after Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Bulgaria also suspended the jabs. Austria, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have impounded one batch of vaccines thought to be linked to clots.

It is just the latest episode in a long-running saga between EU countries and drug-maker AstraZeneca over its vaccine, which has seen ministers accuse the company of nationalism, impose export bans on its jabs, wrongly claim it is not effective in over-65s and reopen old wounds with recently-departed Brexit Britain.

Children as young as 11 have been beheaded by ISIS-linked militants who have killed more than 2,500 people over the last three years in Mozambique.

One mother told Save the Children that her eldest son, 12, had his head cut off close to where she was hiding with her three other children when their village was raided.

Another mother described her heartache at leaving her murdered 11-year-old son in their village without a burial because her family were forced to flee. Nearly 580,000 people left their homes last year as violence intensified across the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province where a group calling itself Islamic State Central Africa Province have been waging a brutal insurgency since 2017.

NEWS: Commuters stranded as commercial bus drivers protest on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

Commuters were on Saturday stranded along the Lagos-Badagry

Expressway as drivers of commercial bus popularly known as ‘

Danfo’ protested alleged extortion and constant manhandling by louts.

No commercial shuttle was seen plying the roads while several

commuters were spotted trekking.

Only commercial motorcycles were seen having a field day

bargaining and conveying passengers on an agreed payment condition.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that commercial bus drivers

had embarked on a “cease commuter operation” along the

Lagos-Badagry axis up to Mile 2 area of the state,

following what they termed an unbearable increment in their ticket fees.

Some commercial bus drivers, who spoke to our correspondent,

disclosed that they would not return to work along the axis unless

government intervened to address an outrageous hike in ticket

fees by transport unions in Lagos.

The drivers alleged that unions under the aegis of National

Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport

Employers Association of Nigeria are responsible for regulating

the affairs of commercial buses in the axis.

They said that members of the unions are allegedly extorting

bus drivers by collecting exorbitant ticket fees, as well as allegedly

brutalising drivers who failed to cooperate with them.

According to them, the union has indiscriminately increased

the price of their ticket from N500 to N800 without a warning notice.

They described the situation as unbearable especially considering

the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had left a

majority of bus drivers in want.

A commercial bus driver, Mr Kehinde Solomon,

said that the ticket fees collected by those he described as

“agberos” had become outrageous. He stressed that drivers pay different

exorbitant amount of money at every bus stop, adding that members

of the union collect these monies by coercion and without empathy.

He said that they often beat up drivers and conductors who delay or refuse

payment and even vandalised their buses.

“Commercial bus drivers usually pay N500 at every bus stop but we are

now compelled to pay N800.  KINDLY SHARE THIS STORYThe drivers alleged that

I’ll take COVID-19 vaccine to boost confidence -Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo has said that he will be the first person to be vaccinated in the state to boost the citizens’ confidence in taking the coronavirus vaccine.

Obaseki disclosed this on Friday in Benin while addressing journalists on the need for residents not to be scared of the vaccines.

The governor said, “I will take mine and if I take mine and am okay, that will give confidence to Edo people.

“The preventive protocol will still be in place, don’t forget that it will still take a while to vaccinate almost 80 per cent of the population that is expected to be vaccinated.

“The fact that you have taken the vaccine does not mean you should be careless, you should not wear a mask, you should not protect yourself because many more people may have not received their own vaccination.

“So, we will still continue to insist and advocate that our people should conduct themselves and behave to prevent COVID-19 from spreading,” he said.

The governor, however, assured that he would provide adequate logistics and security at the state medical facilities during the vaccination exercise.

Breaking> Nigerians will no longer live in fear, CDS Irabor assures

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, has assured that the newly promoted Service Chiefs would ensure that Nigerians no longer lives in fear.

Irabor gave the assurance when he fielded questions from State House correspondents after the service chiefs were decorated with their new ranks, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.

He also pledged that the service chiefs in collaboration with other security agencies would soon restore normalcy to all troubled areas across the country.

AD ALSO: He said: “Nigerians expect us to bring about peace and security in concert with other security agencies, that we will do.

“We can’t live in fear. And we will ensure that whatever brings fear to Nigerians before now will be a thing of the past.

“Peace and security is not just the security of the borders alone. It comes with having to build bridges across various divides.

“We, as members of the Armed Forces, will never in any way demand peace and security of our nation in the hands of the terrorists. Rather it is we that will determine the peace and not for us to leave it in the hands of the terrorists.’’

According to the CDS, what the new service chiefs will not do is to give instructions to their subordinates and not do the same.

“What we will not do is to give instructions to our subordinates and not do the same.

“By extension, we will command the troops based on the expectations that we have of them and they will do it according to the expectations that we have of them too,’’ he said.

“Strategies are not sacrosanct. Of course, there are dynamics that we need to begin to look at, what needs to be reviewed, and that is precisely what we are doing currently. On whether the new service chiefs will consider change of strategies in the fight against insurgency, banditry and violent crimes in the country, Irabor said they would review the current strategies with a view to meeting the demands of current security challenges.

“We review various strategies and of course come up with new ones to be able to meet the demands of the current realities,’’ he added.

He noted that the president had given them a marching order to restore peace to all troubled areas in the country, saying they would work assiduously to achieve that.

On what Nigerians should expect from the newly promoted CDS and the service chiefs in the next 100 days, Irabor said:

“No doubt, next 100 days is not as important as today. I believe that as members of the Armed Forces working in concert with the rest of the security agencies, we will bring Mr President’s expectations to bear in terms of our task.

“But let me also let you know that the inevitable is that Nigerians will indeed experience peace and security across the land.’

The CDS, who thanked the president for giving them the opportunity to serve the nation, enjoined all citizens to partner with the security agencies in ensuring peace and progress of the nation. (NAN)
